Starcrossed Down?

…is down? Permanently? I had just logged on a little over 24 hrs ago and it was up and running with no indication of closure, then tried to log in after work last night but got an error code so assumed a temporary server down, but then learned tonight that it is GONE gone.
Does anyone have an inside scoop as to whether or not there is a zip file somewhere for download or a way to us to retrieve, at the very least, our personal creative content, ie logs? Feeling much sadness and disappointment here for the sudden yoink without the opportunity to say goodbyes with fellow players and save all my work, but am hoping the Admin is okay. :frowning:

I have no information about the game, but can confirm that it appears to be down.

All Ares games have the potential to generate a wiki archive ZIP file, but the game admin have to either enable the feature that builds one nightly (available from the wiki-archive page) or run it manually and put the ZIP file somewhere players can get it.

I can’t find the server even on the list of closed games. Weirdly, it is still in my profile’s list of active games.

Sigh. If you find out what happened, can you post it here? Even if it’s vague like “Staff lost interest.”

Thanks, Faraday.

Update: a fellow player was able to secure a zip copy of the wiki before it shut down and passed it to another, who Discorded it to me last night, so if you played there and would like that file, hit me up and I will share!

As for the /why/, I knoweth not.

The game info has it set Private, which means only people who had characters there will see it on their profiles.

That’s the thing. I do have an account there. Or I did, anyway.

And you don’t see the game under your profile? You have to be logged in so it knows you’re you.

Okay, I think I’ve been unclear, so here’s the situation.

  1. I am/was a player on StarCrossed.
  2. I am logged in to AresCentral.
  3. StarCrossed shows up in my player profile as normal

but

  1. I can’t find the StarCrossed listing in AresCentral at all. It’s as though StarCrossed never existed, as far as AC is concerned.

I suspect the answer lies in something Faraday already posted: that the game’s information has been set private, but I wanted to clear up the confusion. In the future, when a game that was public changes status, could that be noted in AresCentral somewhere, so we at least know it’s not a glitch?

Addendum: I have now unlinked my handle from StarCrossed, so StarCrossed stops showing up in my “current” list.

I would love a copy of the zip file, CrabLady. Thank you. How do we do this?

Thank you for clarifying. It is working as intended. Private games are not listed on the game directory because the game directory is there to advertise open games to the public. They will, however, show up on your profile if you’ve linked a character.

It is exceptionally rare for a game to go private once it has been open to the public. In fact, I can’t think of another situation where that’s happened. Usually they just close. Or at minimum I would expect the game owners to at least tell the players what’s up. This is kind of a weird situation.

Just to weigh-in, I’ve done this repeatedly - set a game to private before closing it, just so no new people wander in while people are finishing up scenes.

I believe @Clockwork also did this with Network, which is why it’s not listed under the Past games list.

OK fair - though the down-side of that is unless you set it BACK to public after you close it, the game will disappear from the archive and not appear on the closed games list. Possibly folks don’t care.

Yeah, I set Network to Private in the last month or so after we closed and were no longer accepting new players so that folks could finish out and take what they needed before I shut it down. Then I uh… forgot to set it public before I took it all down and deleted the server. Then I couldn’t put it back up again to set it back to public.

Oops.

I also have a copy of the Starcrossed wiki export that I grabbed before it was taken down if folks need it. Feel free to send a private message and I’ll get it to you.

I’ll let Poison be the one to elaborate if she wants to, but it was taken down by the game runner deliberately and is, for all intents and purposes, down permanently. I’m not aware of any intent for it to return.

I cared. I just had already deleted everything when I realized it and it was too late. XD

Makes sense. I fixed it

Thank you!! Much appreciated.

Sorry, work got crazy on me, but are you on Discord? I can get it to you that way!

I am indeed on Discord. ubergeek72
