Suggestion: Plugin for Texts

I love texting RP, but I don’t like having to always open a scene for it. And I hate even more the idea of just having ‘forever’ scenes with people your character regularly texts with.

I haven’t yet begun digging into the code (because I am notgoodcoder) but I think there’s a space to add a texting command similar to PMs. Even have it show up in the side list on the web portal.

I FEEL like it’d be easy to implement (clone the PM stuff, but rename it to text or txt or whatever) but I’ve only ever done very minor edits in Ares so I could be wrong and it’d actually be a headache.

Some other thoughts:

  • With cloning the PM code (if doable), it’d enable people to report texts if someone does something naughty
  • Maybe a feature that will let you turn the last # of texts into a scene

I may someday try to find a way to make this a plugin, but as it stands I am not code-capable enough to do so and thus thought I’d share it here.

Actually one of the most popular plugins (maintained by @Tat) extends the scenes system for texts: GitHub - spiritlake/ares-txt-plugin: Text messaging plugin for AresMUSH.

Someone could certainly create and share a different text message plugin that more closely mirrors PMs. Though I think experience with the text plugin on other games shows that people like to share their “text scenes”, so integration with the scene system seems to be a common desire. You could also just use PMs/mail with an [IC] prefix to denote it’s an IC message.

FWIW, you can use the existing txt plugin outside of scenes if everyone involved is on a client; they can work exactly like PMs in that respect, and don’t need to be attached to a scene. But for folks on the web portal, it only works in a scene.
