Small bug | Angle brackets & scenes

Hey there.

A player sent me this bug:

Currently, << dragontalk >> gets italicized during a scene (yay!), but the italics don’t show up in the scene that’s posted.

It looks like << this works for italics >> everywhere except in posted scenes.

So in a live scene and elsewhere on the portal you see << Italics are the best! >> but the posted version is just << Italics are the best! >>

Thanks!

Thanks for the report.

That’s interesting, but kind of by design.

<< isn’t a standard way to do italics in either the basic markdown syntax or the wikidot extension. I actually can’t find it in any of the common markdown guides, and am honestly suprised it works anywhere.

The reason it doesn’t work in the formatted log is because there’s some code that turns < into < to prevent various common formatting glitches. I think the potential downside of those glitches outweighs the benefits of turning << into italics. It’s always possible to edit the log after sharing if one really wants to tweak the format.

That makes sense.

Could it be made consistent? Right now, it’s italicized everywhere except the posted scenes. Could it be made to stop italicizing in the active scenes, wiki, etc., so it matches across the portal?

It probably makes sense to do it for live scenes to mirror the posted scenes, but there’s no easy way to turn it off everywhere. I can’t control the internals of the markdown engine and don’t want to add special processing to everywhere. There might also be unforseen formatting effects for existing articles / forum posts / etc. for a minimal benefit of an undocumented markdown format.
