Pages/PMs Revisited

It’s been awhile since I polled folks on this, so I figured I’d ask again.

What do you guys think about saving private messages (aka pages) to the database in order to enable PMs from the web portal?

Please reply here and/or take this survey:

  • Yes! I want to PM/page from the portal.
  • No! I don’t want PMs/pages stored.
  • Whatever. I don’t care one way or the other.
  • Let individual games decide.
  • Other (please specify)

Game-runners, I’d appreciate if you post this on your games so your players can chime in.

Saving PMs to a database is a pretty standard feature in forums, chat programs, etc. but so is email registration. MUSHers have always been touchy about privacy.

It bears noting that - with or without this feature - there’s nothing to stop nefarious staffers on any MU server (penn/tiny/ares/evennia) from logging any and all text you send to server. What we have with pages currently is more of an illusion of privacy than any real actual guarantee of privacy.

It’s also worth noting that allowing individual players to opt in or out is not on the table at this time. It’s just not a viable solution IMHO due to poor user experience.
