A couple folks have had an issue with the new custom color variables. The upgrade script is supposed to give them default values, but it hasn’t worked for everyone.
If you get an error about box-words-color and the game won’t start, go to the setup screen under text files (way down at the bottom) and edit colors.scss. Make sure all of these color variables are defined (you can make them whatever colors you want)
If your game is down and you can’t get to the setup screen, you can go to the server shell and edit the file directly using a shell-based text editor. For example: nano aresmush/game/styles/colors.scss
Passing along a bit of feedback accumulated after a few days of playing.
Suggestion for the reply/edit window: allow hiding of the two teal bars and everything in them (WYSIWYG editor stuff), perhaps via a toggle to the right (or middle) of ‘Write Preview ? ’ (Or ditch them altogether if you prefer.)
‘Active Scenes’ page: didn’t it include who posed last, before? It would be great to get that again!
There were several requests to hide last posed name from the scenes page for privacy reasons. It was already hidden for private scenes, and it appeared (though I could be wrong) that some games had hidden it for public ones too with custom code/CSS. Since that seemed to be the prevailing sentiment, and I couldn’t think of a compelling reason why it needed to be there (since participants can see new scene activity on the Play screen and notices), I removed it.
This one hit me last night. It’s super small, but here’s when I missed it: I’m in a scene with one other person, and we’re posing 1-2 times per hour; I posed, then went into another room to watch a show and wait for my turn, but I pulled up the scene on my phone to see if it was my turn to pose, and it just says Last Pose: 1h.
I have to click in to find out if that’s MY last pose, or my friend posed back shortly after I did, and that’s THEIR pose. I’ll also use it when I know my place in pose order; if the last pose is Bob, I know it’s my turn, but if it’s Jim, I still gotta wait.
Again, this is SUPER SMALL and not a deal-breaker. Just found myself missing it in a tiny way.
I understand the concern, but I’m a little confused why you’d be using the Active Scenes screen to see if it’s your turn and not, say, the Notifications screen (which would send you a notification when someone posed) or the Play screen (which would have a “new activity” flag by the scene). It just doesn’t feel like the Active Scenes list is the best place to get that info.
I don’t feel super strongly about it one way or the other, I just changed it because folks had asked for it on the basis of a more compact display and also privacy.
It’s just a matter of it having been convenient, and now it’s less so. Habits can be changed if the prevailing sentiment is that it should be gone.
Why I used it: The /play screen only has an activity flag; no info about when/who, so it takes two clicks (/play → scene title, wait for scene to scroll to bottom) to find out if it’s my turn to pose. The /notifications screen has tabs on it, so it takes three clicks (/notifications → character tab → view button, wait for scene to scroll to bottom).
I am curious about how this makes it more private, though. The “who posed” was already hidden if I didn’t have access to the scene. I could before and still can still click-through and see who owns the activity, so where’s the privacy value added?
Everybody has access to public scenes, though, so that information would be available to everyone. It still is if you click through to the scene and hunt through the poses (though that still requires you to be logged in), it’s just a little less ‘in your face’.
It sounds like what you really would like, though, is a better way to see when it’s your turn. Not just when someone posed / who posed last.
