Minor Nuisances

The config option is idle_scene_timeout_days in scenes, so I’d double-check what yours is. I know the default timeout is 3 days now but I didn’t check to see if it always has been

Oh. Haha.

Yeah, we set it to 1 day.

I’ll… mull over how long scenes is going to be if it goes to two days. That could be brutally spammy.

I mean it’s up to you. It’s configurable for a reason. It is an annoyance to people who constantly have to restart their scenes when they’re doing a slow-RP scene across multiple days, but those scenes are the exception rather than the rule on most games.

My guess would be that the list probably wouldn’t be a lot longer if the timeout is longer. My impression is that people generally stop their scenes when they finish them, and that many autostopped scenes end up getting reopened and picked up anyway because they weren’t actually finished.

I also think people use the active scenes page on the portal more than the scenes command, so more people may be negatively affected by having to reopen scenes than by the list being long(er).

I’m definitely biased, so I may well be wrong on both of these and maybe there’s evidence to say so. But if not it might be worth an experiment!

Yeah, no. I get the annoyance of restarting a scene.

Buuuuuuut as someone that likes things tidy, seeing scenes sitting for 24+ hours with no poses? Especially when there are people that have scenes running for weeks and weeks.

Anyway. I’ll mull it over. Maybe if things slow down to where it wouldn’t scroll-scroll-scroll…

24 hours does seem like a really short time for reopened scenes. If someone reopened it, they probably have a reason, right? I use the ‘active scenes’ link on the portal to check for open/active scenes… I’ve never seen an ‘open’ scene that was open past when it should be, and that’s the only thing that would bug me. I don’t mind if people have ongoing private scenes.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’m not planning to differentiate between reopened scenes and non-reopened ones. The intent of the auto stop is to stop scenes that should be over, but somebody forgot to stop. If it doesn’t have activity, then it might be abandoned - no matter how many times it’s previously been started/stopped.

Oh, I know. I was more replying to @KarmaBum wanting to set it to 24 hours instead of the new default of 7 days. If scenes are set to auto-close in 7 days, that seems more reasonable than 24 hours. But I can definitely understand why you don’t want to differentiate in the code between stopped and not-stopped.

Unless I misunderstood and something else is being set to 24 hours instead of 7 days, which is possible, in which case, my bad. XD

Editing to add an alternative of setting it to 48 or 72, KarmaBum, if 7 days is too long?

I semi-obsessively also like things tidy. But when my scenes run for weeks now it’s because that’s the timing that’s working for getting through them. Because we’re only able to overlap for a couple poses a day, or because someone gets sick or swamped with work or has to go out of town. It’s stressful to go ‘crap, we’re at 23h and X didn’t pose yet, do I rush them or throw in an OOC to keep us open or what?’ or get ‘ding, new activity’, look, and see ‘this scene has changed status’ and know now I have to reopen it and add to its scroll with another OOC to keep it alive. I don’t feel my scenes are mere list clutter even if it’s taking longer for them to get finished than someone who gets through five a day.

Okay, so what if… there were an option for scenes/active scenes to show you only the open ones and ones you were in by default, and scenes/running or a toggle button on active scenes expanded it to all currently running scenes? I dunno, spitballing here.

ETA: or maybe it could just have pages?

Oh, that’s a good idea, @Ren! About scenes/active scenes only showing you live ones and ones you’ve had an invite to/are in. It doesn’t help to see even a scene you’re in if you’re not officially able to join it yet, I’d think.

Or yeah, pages. But definitely a +1 for scenes/active scenes changing its default.

I appreciate the discussion. The My Scenes page is for just your own personal scenes. Active scenes is more a gauge of the activity on the game as a whole, similar to the where list in non Ares games. While I can certainly understand the argument for limiting the active list, that’s really not a big concern for me right now.

Guiiiiiiiilty.

SGM is up to scene 126.
Paradox and I have scene #9 open. Still. It has hit timeout and closed twice.

I’d like to suggest having the related scenes linked in a given scene automatically order themselves by date! Thank you.

When I restart a scene that auto-stopped early, I then refresh and start to pose a reply. Almost without fail, it will stop itself again before I’ve finished my pose, then auto-refresh, losing my pose-in-progress.

Is it possible to lengthen the time it remains open before closing itself again to an hour at least?

Thanks!

Download Scenes is awesome, except, it really struggles with color codes (rolls, text scenes). An example:

Not sure how easy this is to fix but on the off chance it’s not already on the radar.

Note: Chrome 77.0386, Windows 10

Italics get escape-codes too, I noticed. Also when I download them they get a .omcsettings extension, which seems weird, but I haven’t had time to try to figure out if that might be something specific to me somehow. (Chrome 77.0.3865.90, Windows 10, but it’s not a new thing.)

You also can’t see italics on the on-screen version on the first page you get when you say you want to download. It’d be awesome if the italics got their asterisks back on that page, so someone who wants just plain text could just copy and paste from that page without losing information (that being, what people decided to emphasise).

Not mine, but this from MSB looks like a typo, ‘is’ for ‘if’:

Words in texts (via txt) do not appear to count as words for achievement purposes.

Texts are an “extra” plugin contributed by @skew and @Tat, so afraid I can’t do anything about that.

Just glancing at the code, it seems that they’re using Scenes.add_to_scene, which follows a different code path than usual poses and won’t trigger the same things.

Would it be possible to link scenes to multiple plots?
